Violence against health workers will be punished

As a result of the actions undertaken by the Moldovan Health Trade Union Federation on March 23, the Parliament adopted the Law no. 50 by which the Moldovan Code of Contraventions was supplemented by a new Article 77 (2) establishing the contravention for the violent action against the medical worker. Aurel Popovici, the president of the Health Federation, today announced on March 30, during the session of the Republican Council of the health national branch trade union centre.

According to Aurel Popovici, in connection with the fact that in recent years there have been several cases of abuses against doctors, the Federation of Health has organized a series of information and awareness-raising actions, flashmobs and advertising spots, meetings with deputies , in order to accomplish Claim no. 11, aiming at completing the Code of Contraventions, with a view to imposing administrative sanctions for persons attacking the honour, dignity, psychic and physical integrity of medical workers, approved by Congress VI of the Trade Union Federation of Health.

Subsequently, the Health Federation sent a letter to the Moldovan Parliament Speaker, Adrian Candu, requesting decision-makers to review the possibility of returning to the vote on the draft law to complete the Code of Contraventions proposed by a group of MPs, but was rejected. However, despite the negative opinions from the Government and the Parliament’s Legal Directorate, the Parliament voted in final reading the draft law that provides for the protection of medical workers.

Thus, for intentional offense or for other behaviour that violates the rights of the medical workers in the performance of their duties, a penalty between 500 lei and 1,250 lei is provided. For corporal injury and hooliganism, a penalty of 1,250 lei up to 7,500 lei or 15 days of contravention arrest is foreseen.
