Guy Ryder, ILO Director General, urges countries in the region to actively promote UN Sustainable Development Goals

Promoting sustained, open and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Objective 8, namely “Decent work and economic growth” were the main topics discussed in Baku, Azerbaijan, at an international conference organized by Azerbaijan Trade Union Confederation (AHIK) on 22 May, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO). The National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova was represented by Sergiu Iurcu, head of the Social-Economic Protection Department.

According to Guy Ryder, the ILO Director General, the most urgent and acute problems that are currently in the world are poverty, unemployment and job shortages, discrimination on various criteria, globalization, which often has negative effects. Guy Ryder said that countries should take into account the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and promote their policies in line with them.

There were organized three panel with speakers from different countries, which shared their experience. Thus, the first panel addressed the creation of decent jobs and the development of sustainable economies. The second panel discussed the impact of the informal economy on decent work and the practices of diminishing illegal work. The third panel discussed how to monitor the implementation of the goals and their reporting, sharing the practices of the countries in the region.

Please note that Goal 8 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda addresses the needs of women and men, youth, people with disabilities and migrant workers and provides key instruments and mechanisms for delivering people-centred economic growth: labour productivity as a the key means of raising real wages, together with competitiveness, business diversification and innovation; decent, well-paid, secure and formal jobs; as well as a robust financial sector for wider access to finance.
