Several young people from the country, including trade union members, participated on November 26 in the workshop on “Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 8 # Decent work and growth # in the vision of young people”, organized in offline and online format by the Youth Commission of the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM). The meeting was attended by representatives of national trade unions; municipal youth structures; organization of young people, leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals, affiliated with the global network “Junior Chamber International” (JCI); the non-governmental organization “EcoVisio Moldova”; students and young entrepreneurs from the country.
Petru Chiriac, vice president of CNSM, at the opening of the workshop said that economic growth can only take place when investments are made and attention is paid to the youth sector, placing it in employment for a long time and respecting its labor rights. “The workshop experience will play an important role for each field of activity where the young people came from, and we, at Confederation level, will definitely discuss and support their best interpretations on this subject, because they are inventive, active, they want to work decently, and thanking to this fact the national economy will only have to benefit,” the trade union leader said.
Alexei Pianih, president of the CNSM Youth Commission, said that SDGs are largely tasks for young people, which should be done by themselves. “The organization of this workshop was based on the desire to motivate our young people to study and deepen this issue, so that they could become aware of how they can become genuinely involved, grow, have decent jobs and economic security in the future. Young people must understand that everything is in their hands,” Pianih noted.
For his part, Petru Grecu, director of Chisinau Municipal Youth Center, informed those present about the activities of supporting and advising young people, stating that for 2021 the center intends to carry out the municipal program “Chisinau-capital of young people actively involved in the labor market”, which aligns with this global objective no. 8.
In order to strengthen the efforts of young people to achieve the sustainable Development Goals, the CNSM Youth Commission came up with the idea of organizing a competition with the same generic approach – “Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 8 # Decent work and economic growth # in the vision of young people”. The aim of the organizers was to offer talented young people in the field of sustainability the opportunity to be promoted and become known to the public, which will help them to discover opportunities for economic promotion, but also to convey the message that sustainable development goals are of vital interest to all mankind.
The contest was attended by young people aged 14-35 who presented their own ideas on SDG 8 at this workshop. The three most ingenious presentations were awarded.
Grigore Vieru, vice-president of JCI Moldova, member of the jury, appreciated that the young people showed responsibility and initiative, perfectly understanding what is happening in society. “Their ideas on sustainable development ranged from the most general to those focused on concrete cases, seeing the problem from the perspective of where they are and coming up with solutions for development. I appreciate that the focus has also been placed on personal development, because, without a society that is progressing in personal and professional terms, all these good ideas would not be possible to implement,” he concluded.
The workshop was carried out within the framework of the project funded by the Municipal Grants Program for Youth Organizations and Initiative Groups, organized by the Directorate General for Education, Youth and Sport, in partnership with Chisinau Municipal Youth Center and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research of the Republic of Moldova.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. These 17 goals are based on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals, and now cover new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities.
