A group of young trade unionists from the national-branch trade union centres from various regions of the Republic of Moldova participated in the activities of the Autumn Trade Union School for Youth entitled ” Involved in trade unions – active in society “, organized by the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM) in the period of 27-28 of October.

During the activity, young people were able to interact with CNSM leadership on the importance and role of youth in trade unions, what are the benefits and opportunities to be involved in the work of the trade union movement, and participate in various trainings, discussion boards and training workshops.

According to Petru Chiriac, vice-president of the CNSM, 25% of the total number of trade union members are young people working in different branches of the national economy.

“We are doing our best to support young people and address the issues they face, including in the process of negotiation and dialogue with the social partners. In this respect, we are taking part in the drafting of laws, policy proposals that would help to support young people so that they remain at home. But to do this, more involvement of all social partners is needed,” says Petru Chiriac.

Tatiana Marian, president of the CNSM Youth Commission, spoke about the CNSM Youth Strategy 2017-2022 and about the Commission’s priorities and achievements in the period 2016-2017.

“Strategically we consider it necessary for young people to be active in the society and to know more about the activity of the trade union movement, how to create a trade union organization, what is the role and objectives of the trade unions in society, how to communicate effectively with the employers. We consider it appropriate that young trade unionists who participate in this school should organize regional forums to discuss the challenges that young people face in different localities and identify solutions to them. It is salutary that young people have created a network of communication and networking on the social media networks,” said Tatiana Marian.

Attending the event, Oleg Budza, CNSM president, had an interactive dialogue with young people, where a wide range of topics – from the socio-economic situation in the country, health and safety at work, the fight against the informal economy, amendments to the legislation which refers to the work relations, youth policies of the CNSM, to the reform of the central public administration.

“The more young people we have in trade unions, the stronger the trade union movement will be. We are worried about negative demographic trends and the growing impact of massive population migration abroad. Young people represent the future and are a priority for the CNSM. On this occasion, I reiterate the position of the CNSM to further support young people and their initiatives,” the trade union leader underlined.

Throughout the School, young people were informed on how to use social networks and other online tools to communicate with the public about the activities, goals and achievements of the trade union movement. At the same time, the participants discussed the current situation regarding the employment relationships targeting young people and their perspectives in society, legal aspects regarding the protection of young people at work.

Also, during the two days, the trade unionists attended the “Trade Union ABC” seminar, a workshop on organizing, have learned techniques to improve youth communication in trade unions, and participated in a personal development and relationship training. Finally, young people made an assessment of the subjects discussed at the School and received certificates of attendance.

We mention that the Youth Strategy 2017-2022 of the CNSM provides for the information and training of young people on various aspects, the development of a structured and continuous social partnership in the youth field, the negotiation and signing of the Collective Convention on the social and economic protection of young people, to solve the problems faced by young people, to diversify the actions of trade unions at all levels in order to motivate and attract young people in trade unions.
