Today, December 15, the Women’s Council of the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM) organized an evaluation session on the activity for the period 2012-2017 and outlined the main directions of activity for the next period. Representatives of the national-branch trade union centers, the CNSM leadership and representatives of the civil society participated in the proceedings.
Liuba Rotaru, president of the Women’s Council within the CNSM, said that despite the many actions organized by the structure she is leading, by the NGO’s, the social partners, the women in our country are discriminated at the workplace and in society, their rights are violated, many women face domestic and workplace violence, have limited access to quality health services, and often operate under high-risk conditions.
“As a result of the activity of the last 5 years, we have something to show to the trade union members. The results are gratifying in terms of organized activities and less satisfactory in terms of achievements. Women in our country face many complex socio-economic problems and it is necessary to combine the efforts of all social partners to improve the situation. We are not satisfied with the latest changes in legislation on pension reform, which is discriminatory towards women. We are also worried about the health status of women in the Republic of Moldova, and we have much to do in this direction,” Liuba Rotaru stressed.
“The Women’s Council within the CNSM is an important structure for the trade union movement. Over the last five years, the Council’s team has been working hard to improve the situation of women, which accounts for about 60% of union membership. We will continue to support the efforts of the Women’s Council within the CNSM and we want to see as many ideas, initiatives and proposals as possible from trade union women,” said Oleg Budza, CNSM president.
Petru Chiriac, deputy chairman of the CNSM, said that the work of the Council was aimed at solving the problems faced by women in order to increase social guarantees, reduce the informal work phenomenon, protect the rights and interests of women and their children.
The trade unionists reviewed the main achievements of the past five years, related to the development of the social partnership, salary policies, indemnities, training activities, implementation of international awareness raising campaigns, development of relations with international organizations.
Participants in the meeting expressed their concern about the situation of women in rural areas, noting that they are facing serious difficulties in finding a decent job with decent wages and decent living conditions in the countryside and not receiving quality services in health.
For the next period, trade unionists aim to contribute to overcoming the reported problems related to gender equality, increasing opportunities for development, stopping violence against women, developing and jointly implementing with social partners social and economic policies to protect the rights and interests of women, promoting women within the governing bodies, improving policies that would ensure a balance between women’s personal and professional lives.
