Corina Fusu, minister of Education: Government will continue to examine the possibilities to rise salaries

After protesting yesterday, March 23, in front of Parliament today education trade unionists gathered in front of Government to cry out their dissatisfaction and claim their labour rights and decent wages.

The front of the crowd showed Corina Fusu, minister of Education, who addressed to demonstrators.

“I know that the current system of remuneration is not very attractive and often you have to work over time, just to receive at the end of the month a salary at least decent. The Ministry of Education is aware of the role of teachers in society, but, unfortunately, the realities of today do not give us much room to manoeuvre.”

Fusu noted that during the previous negotiations with trade union there were identified sources to increase the single allowance for young professionals, increase scholarships for students, resulting in the same time, reduction of teaching workload for young professionals to 75% in the first three years of activity.

Participants at the protest, however, were outraged that the government failed to find effective solutions to their salaries increase and that, until now, were proposed the addition of only 100 lei, which prompted trade unionist to suspend the negotiations and to resume protests.

“We understand that this increase seems insufficient. Government will continue to examine ways to target resources to increase salaries. We are ready to resume negotiations. We are in the process of discussions with the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Protection, which try to develop a new formula to increase teachers’ salaries based on performance,” added Fusu.

Meanwhile, the protesters chanted “Shame!” and continued to threaten to organize a general strike.
