Interactive dialog with and about young people

Over 150 young trade unionists, members of the Youth Commission of the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM), members of the Youth Committee of Pan-European Regional Council of International Trade Union Confederation (PERC / ITUC), and national youth trainers participated on Tuesday, November 15, at the interactive dialogue with and about young people: “Youth solidarity – a sustainable trade union.”

The activity is part of the International Conference of Young Trade unionists “An inclusive and sustainable trade union for youth”, which was held in Chisinau on 14-15 of November.

Participants discussed in a free manner the problems and future of young people from Moldova and actions of trade unions to support them, exposing themselves to other topical issues affecting youth sector.

According to Tatiana Marian, president of the CNSM Youth Commission, young people face a number of issues, including at workplace. “An alarming factor is the high degree of social exclusion of young people – about 29% do not attend any form of education or training and are not engaged in work. 10% of young working without an individual labour contract, 4 of 10 are abroad and only 3 of 10 are employed. These figures should alarm us. We want young people to benefit from opportunities, to be motivated, and their role in society to be more pronounced, not only at the central government level, but also local,” said Marian.

In turn, Petru Chiriac, vice president of CNSM, said that young people depend on the durability and sustainability of the country, but the lack of attractive jobs, low wages, lack of purchasing housing and poor engagement of young people in decision-making processes seriously affect this category of population.

“Young people must be supported not only in statements, but by concrete actions by all social actors. We have high hopes that, eventually, national convention will be adopted for socio-economic development of the youth, a document that will give us a necessary framework of cooperation for their protection,” reiterated Chiriac.

During the meeting, participants mentioned the need to create a network of inter-youth communications, capacity building of young people and empowering them to participate in various trade union activities and cooperation with the branch unions. Also, they considered it appropriate to create partnerships on developing services for young people, by establishing cross-border relations and signing cooperation agreements. All these actions will lead to protection of rights of young people aimed at primary studies, work, fair remuneration, social protection, starting a family and others.
