Sharan Burrow was re-elected as ITUC General Secretary

The delegates of the Fourth World Congress of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) re-elected Sharan Burrow as ITUC General Secretary, which will hold the mandate for the next four years. It is Sharan Burrow’s third term in this position.

The World Congress of the ITUC takes place during December 2-7 in Denmark. Delegates discuss the strategies of the trade unions on decent work, wages and social justice at a global level, the ITUC campaigns and their impact.

Susanna Camusso, General Secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Italy (CGIL), also claimed this function.

For Sharan Burrow were registered 54,783,316 votes and for Susanna Camusso were registered 50,196,465 votes of Congress delegates.

The delegation of the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM), leaded by Oleg Budza, CNSM president, supported Sharan Burrow’s candidacy as ITUC General Secretary. We would like to point out that the CNSM announced the support of this candidacy in September, during a meeting of the CNSM Confederal Committee.

In Copenhagen, Oleg Budza addressed a congratulatory message to the ITUC re-elected General Secretary, where it was mentioned that the vote was a democratic one and thanked the organizers for the way the congress’ work was carried out. At the same time, the trade union leader pointed out several aspects regarding the activity of the trade union movement in the Republic of Moldova. The speech of CNSM president can be accessed here.

Congress participation: 250 organizations representing 131 countries and territories with 106 million members, are represented by 779 delegates. 422 are men and 357 are women, the percentage of delegated women being 45.8%. 74 delegates are younger than 35, 9.5% young delegates.

We recall that the CNSM became a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in February 2010.
