General Police Inspectorate (GPI) welcomes the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM) initiative to discipline drivers and reduce the number of accidents of pedestrians.

Remember that CNSM recently addressed to the board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with a request to initiate the procedure for amending the provisions of the Contravention Code that refers to penalize drivers who do not give legal priority to pedestrians or cyclists, to tighten the sanctions laid down by it.

In a response letter to CNSM, the board of the GPI said that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has prepared a draft law of amending the Contravention Code, which lays down amendments to par. (3) art.238, referring to penalize drivers who do not give legal priority to pedestrians or cyclists.

Thus, under the proposed changes, drivers who neglect pedestrians could be liable for fines of 30 to 50 conventional units by assigning 4 penalty points. Currently Contravention Code provides fines up to 10 conventional units and by assigning 2 penalty points, which means between 20 and 200 lei.

The draft law will be submitted for examination and approval in Parliament.
