On the eve of the International Family Day, marked annually on May 15, the Women’s Commission of the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM) organized today, May 14, within the Trade Union House a round table discussion on the social and economic situation in the country and have been identified solutions that could help improve it.
Representatives of the national-branch trade union centres, the CNSM leadership, Valentina Buliga, deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the president of the Social Protection, Health and Family Committee, Viorica Dumbrăveanu, state secretary in the field of social assistance, Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection.
Liuba Rotaru, president of the Women’s Commission within the CNSM, presented a picture showing a series of trends affecting the “family” institution in the Republic of Moldova. “The statistics show a more alarming situation: the number of divorces is rising to 40%; the number of newborns in 2017 went down by 3.4% compared to 2016; increased number of children with disabilities; children are educated through the Internet because many parents are going to work abroad; about 37 thousand families have only one child; the villages become deserted; in 2030 we might have a population of only 2 million 300 thousand inhabitants; significantly increase the discrepancies between village and urban life “.
To change these indicators, Liuba Rotaru mentioned, it is necessary for the population to be well informed, especially in rural areas, to create more opportunities for young people and their families so that young people have access to education and quality health services, decent jobs and wages, and migrant citizens to be involved in development programs of the country.
Oleg Budza, president of the CNSM, said that “family” is the “core of society”, it is the main support a person can enjoy, it is absolutely necessary to have strong, healthy families in which to dominate harmony and abundance. “It is important that every mature person is in the workplace, with a decent salary that could provide the children with a happy childhood and the elderly with a quiet old age,” the trade union leader underlined.
During the talks Valentina Buliga, deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, mentioned that trade unions have been and remain a strong entity, an institution that actively promotes the values of the “family”. “Today we live in social processes and complex transformations that have not been recorded in the past. For the past few years we’ve been alerted to negative trends that seriously affect our society’s evolution. In order to solve the mentioned problems, it is necessary not only to develop cooperation within the social partnership – to change things for the better, every citizen must understand that the Republic of Moldova is our country and to contribute to the development of the country “, emphasized Valentina Buliga.
The participants of the round table welcomed the implementation of reforms in the social and health spheres that led to an increase in the social package for mothers, the gradual increase of single childbirth indemnities, the establishment of the support allowance until the child’s age of 3 years, granting paternal leave of 14 calendar days.
Those present also concerned about the negative impact on women of raising retirement ages and contributing to the implementation of retirement reform. At the same time, domestic violence continues to be a problem affecting women in the Republic of Moldova.
International Family Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1995 with the aim of raising public awareness and emphasizing the importance of “family,” as people began to move away from this institution.
